Hawai`i Ākea

Written by Keo Woolford and Michael Lanakila Casupang

E Hawaiʻi ākea, ʻo ʻoe he hulilau
He manawa kūpono a kāua
Ho’i mai ka lani mai
Noho i ka mehana o ka poli

Launa ʻole kou nani, ke kilohi aku wau
Hoʻōla i ka ua Tuahine
He ʻeha mai loko mai
Mau nō ke aloha i ka poli

Hōʻike aku ʻoe i ke ao o nā akua
i nā pua onaona kamahaʻo
Hoʻohihi ka manaʻo uluwehi
Hoʻopili i ke aloha o ka poli

Vast Hawaiʻi, you are my mother
This is the proper time for us to reunite
Returning from the sky
To dwell in the warmth of your bosom

Incomparable is your beauty as I gaze upon you
Healed in the tears of the Tuahine rain
There is hurt from deep within
But still, only love remains in your bosom

You are displayed in the realm of the gods
In the flowers, fragrant and glorious
My memories flourish in the verdure
We shall be close in your beloved bosom forever

This mele speaks of returning to Hawai`i after being away for a long time. Seeing the place of birth and upbringing with a new found love, appreciation and adoration. All senses are heightened to the magnificence of your home, your mother. The pain of being away is healed from the reconnection.
